En toen zwichtte ik. Voor le iPad. Ik zou ding welhaast een iPet kunnen noemen als ik zie hoe mensen het fanatiek overal mee naartoe sleuren. Het ding komt via via uit de Apple Store op Fifth Avenue. Een tablet leek me al lang er wel iets. Zo lig ik vaak ’s avonds voor pampus in de zetel en dan vind ik een laptop een bijzonder onpraktisch ding om. Bovendien zijn tablets echt wel gemeen goed geworden. Dus waarom ook niet?

• First 3D rendered film from 1972 — This is really neat. It’s a very very early digital 3D rendered film (family lore is that it’s the first, ever). It looks old because it is. It was created in 1972 by Ed Catmull (the founder of Pixar) and Fred Parke with a little help from my dad. I also think that this is the only digital copy of it.
• The evolution of the web — The web today is a growing universe of interlinked web pages and web apps, teeming with videos, photos, and interactive content. What the average user doesn’t see is the interplay of web technologies and browsers that makes all this possible.
• Commotion Wireless – Overview – Chambana.net Tech Projects - With support from New America Foundation’s Open Technology Initiative (OTI), Chambana.net, and Acorn Active Media the developers, technavists, and organizers here propose to build a new type of tool for democratic organizing: an open source “device-as-infrastructure” distributed communications platform that integrates users’ existing cell phones, WiFi-enabled computers, and other WiFi-capable personal devices to create a metro-scale peer-to-peer (mesh) communications network.
• Domino’s Pizza: PIzza Tracking Show — Bascule and Asatsu-DK Inc. make waiting for your food delivery an entertaining experience, in the Pizza Tracker Show for Domino’s Japan. The campaign, similar to Crispin’s Pizza Tracker in the U.S., invites online pizza order placers to register to see the progress of their pizza delivery in realtime, with some added bells and whistles.

Hm. Toen ik hoorde van Steve Jobs’ nieuwste ei schoten deze dingen door mijn hoofd:

• Déjà vu
• “He kijkt! Een dienblad voor mijn pintje!”
• “He kijkt! Dat lijkt wel zon fancy touch ding uit Star Trek!”
• Zou ik dit ooit willen hebben?
• Waarom, waarom, o waarom zo’n ongeïnspireerde naam?

Neen, ik was er gisterenavond niet warm voor te krijgen. En nu nog altijd niet. Het is duidelijk een entertainmentgizmo. Je koopt het omdat je op de trein of op de bus op een degelijk scherm – ipv je iPod, PSP of smartphone – naar een film wil kijken. Je koopt het omdat je dit zou kunnen laten rondslingeren op de salontafel.  Je koopt dit omdat je een gadgetfreak bent.
