Casey Neistat lanceerde een klein jaar geleden Beme, zijn tech start-up. Beme is een kruising tussen Periscope en Snapchat. Je kan er korte video’s mee maken, maar er zijn drie grote beperkingen: er zijn geen filters om je video mee op te smukken, je kan niet volgen op het scherm van je smartphone terwijl je filmt en het eindresultaat zie je zelf pas nadat je je video met je volgers heb gedeeld.

Begin deze week lanceerde Beme en Neistat hun versie 1.0 mét een Android variant. Gelijk heb ik die geïnstalleerd. Ik heb nog maar twee filmpjes gemaakt, maar het concept spreekt wel enorm aan. Je verstopt jezelf niet achter je scherm en er is geen post bewerking waar je je zorgen over kan/hoeft te maken. Filmen en on line gooien. Meer is er niet aan.

Zoals dat gaat met nieuwe sociale platformen zit Beme nu zo’n beetje de honeymoon fase waarin vooral de early adopters de hele speeltuin voor zich hebben. Het is me ook niet echt duidelijk wat het business model rond Beme is: er is vooralsnog geen ruimte voor reclame voorzien en ik zie ook nog niet meteen merken op de kar springen. Benieuwd dus hoe dit verder gaat evolueren.

In ieder geval is ’s mans enthousiasme aanstekelijk om de komende dagen even te experimenteren.

WordPress TV

De mannen van WordPress hebben een nieuw kindje: WordPress TV. De tagline van de nieuwe dienst: WordPress.tv is your visual resource for all things WordPress. Je vindt er natuurlijk de klassieke video tutorials gaande van hoe je WordPress installeert, basisfuncties gebruiken en dergelijke meer.

Interessanter is dat het ook een kanaal is waarlangs je een pak WordCamp presentaties terug kan vinden. WordPress biedt zo een platform om ideeën die op WordCamps ontstaan of worden verspreid naar een veel groter en breder publiek te brengen. Je vindt er ook interviews met de developers terug. Bekijk maar eens het interview van Robert Scobble met Matt Mullenweg.

Het is zeker geen YouTube. Op dit moment kunnen bezoekers zelf geen videos uploaden en moet je de mensen achter wordpress.tv op de hoogte brengen. Misschien dat dat verandert maar voor een site als wordpress.tv lijkt het me zeker niet slecht om een zekere kwaliteitscontrole in te bouwen. Verder kan je niet veel meer dan een comment nalaten op een video. De videos zijn uiteraard ook gecatalogeerd via tags en categories. En de videos kan je natuurlijk ook embedden op je eigen site. Uiteindelijk hoeven al die franjes ook niet: het gaat allemaal om WordPress en kennis over WordPress delen.

Jay! Britney Spears’ sex tape? You really want to see it? Well, unfortunately I don’t have it and I can’t dig up all the green to get it from the dude who actually does have it. But then again, if you are american and you did take the liberty and the effort to search for this infamous tape, surely you can watch this video with, among others, Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry, Ellen DeGeneres, Sarah Silverman and many others.

Mars vs Web 2.0

Kristof, looking at your post, i couldn’t resist but thinking: the Mars Exploration Rover Mission should’ve been using the web! From a scientific point of view, the mission was a success. But what about the media? Did the story of those two brave robots really break anything? Well, it did at the start, but now, more then three years into the mission and a with fair amount of miles on record, how much media exposure do they get now? Well, not quite so much. Though the photos are still quite spectacular, the next time we here from those robots in mainstream media, is when they finally die.

But what if the web acted as a platform? What if the JPL and NASA bobo’s start using all those Web 2.0 toys to enhance exposure? How about Flickr to distribute all those wonderfull media? It would be infinitely cool to get those pictures pushed through syndication! How about a video-dairy on YouTube? Okay, rocketpeople don’t really have time to make those, but still… And what about Twitter and Pownce? Those robots were designed and built long before those even were thought of as a concept, but how hard can it be to translate the highlights from the transmissionlogs into simple, understandable things such as ‘exploring this rock’, ‘taking another picture of a panorama’, ‘doing some self-diagnosis’ or ‘uh-oh! Sandstorm heading this way! Better conserve battery-power!’

I think it would make the results of such projects better accessible, more tangible and therefore improve our grasp over other worlds. It would demonstrate that ‘rocketscience’ should not be some expensive leisure that’s only meant to be enjoyed by a select few. Finally, exposure means comprehension about why we are still doing this! And – of course – it means hard cash! Something NASA can use to fund new exciting projects.
Then again, I would already be happy if they’d done away with the butt-ugly HTML/JS spaghetti that’s supposed to be their main website.

What’s in a name?

Bon. Naar het schijnt hebben ze bij Apple een hoop nieuwe spulletjes. Zoals daar zijn: een iPod video, een nieuwe iTunes en een upgrade voor de iMac G5.

Die laatste twee zijn natuurlijk heel erg fijn. Alleen vraag ik mij net zoals Pietel af wat we in godsnaam gaan aanvangen met de videofunctie van iPod. Ik zit er toch niet op te wachten om een film in H.264 of MPEG-4 te bekijken op een veel te klein schermpje op bv. de trein of in de tram. Want dat is dan ook zo’n beetje het enige moment dat ik kan voorstellen wanneer dit van pas kan komen. Not to mention wat de medemens zal denken wanneer je met pluggen in je oren en glazige ogen gefixeerd naar dat witte doosje zit te staren. Let wel, ik heb gezien wat een PSP presteert. Dus ik kan mij voorstellen dat Apple die prestaties met gemak evenaart. Maar of het een toegevoegde waarde brengt, daar blijf ik twijfels over hebben.
