Mollom going strong

Okay. It’s been almost two weeks since I released the first installment of my Mollom plugin to the testers. I got some feedback and started hacking away. I’m almost ready to release a new betaversion. So, here’s a list of what’s been improved:

Added: bulk moderation of unmoderated comments
Added: policy mode. If Mollom services are down, you can choose to automattically restrict access to commenting
Improved: when the plugin is deactivated, the database is restored to it’s previous state (all Mollom related data will be removed)
Improved: only comments with a mollom session id are now shown in the mollom moderation queue (relevance)
Improved: assigning a mollom session id to a comment
Improved: the moderation queue interface is more userfriendly
Improved: Configuration of the plugin
Improved: error handling

As you can guess, I’ve not implemented trackback support yet. Dries and Benjamin suggested to send ‘unsure’ trackbacks to the moderation queue and skip the whole CAPTCHA part. I’m going to implement and release that one in the last testversion.

On a sidenote: I didn’t take into account that the plugin should work with WordPress MU but one of the testers tried it anyway. Apparently, next to a few minor bugs, the plugin seemed to function. Which is a nice bonus.

Trip down memory lane

Wat heb ik vandaag gepresteerd? Wel, ik heb wat geknoeid in JAVA! Trip down memory lane want dat is toch al van mijn ASI opleiding (2003-2004) geleden dat ik nog eens serieus met JAVA heb gewerkt!

Wat ik heb gemaakt? Een eenvoudige TIFF naar JPEG batch converter! Eigenlijk is het vooral een grafische schil rond nconvert. Het werkt eigenlijk zo: je geeft een bronfolder met TIFF bestanden op, je geeft een doelfolder op waar je JPEG afbeeldingen terecht moeten komen en dan duw je op de grote ‘conversie’ knop. Even later krijg je een ‘conversie voltooid’ berichtje en zijn je versgebakken JPEG beeldjes (met watermerk en al!) klaar voor consumptie.

Swing, callbacks, inner classes en listeners zijn vandaag mijn deel geweest! De code zelf is niet om aan te zien, maar het werkt anders best wel ok. Ik zou de configuratie nog wat vriendelijker willen maken door alles in een aparte config.xml file of zo te steken. Nah ja…

Waarom? Omdat we over een paar duizenden TIFF bestanden beschikken die we zouden willen omzetten. Liefst op een relatief eenvoudige no-nonsens manier. En dit leek me wel de aanpak die dit het meest benaderde.

Dapper Drake

Kijk! Ubuntu heeft een nieuwe versie uit: [tag]Dapper Drake[/tag] 6.06 LTS. Dat laatste staat voor Long Term Support. Inderdaad, dit is de eerste [tag]Ubuntu[/tag] release die ook mikt op bedrijven (servers, desktops, workstations) door gedurende een langere termijn (5 jaar) ondersteuning te bieden. Daarom is deze release vooral ook gericht op stabiliteit. Daarnaast blijft Ubuntu natuurlijk ook gebruiksgemak na streven. Quote [tag]Mark Shuttleworth[/tag]:

Ubuntu has a reputation for working well out of the box on desktops, and we have worked to bring that same ease of deployment and configuration to the server marketplace

Kortom: Ubuntu is op dit moment het meest interessante opstapje als je eens een alternatief besturingsysteem zou willen proberen. Eenvoudige installatie en gebruiksvriendelijkheid bediening blijven daarbij de voornaamste doelstellingen. Standaard wordt Ubuntu geleverd met Gnome 2.14.1. De liefhebbers kunnen uiteraard altijd gratis hun CD’tjes bestellen.
