Naar het schijnt loopt New Orleans momenteel onder water. Orkaan Katrina gaat er blijkbaar stevig tegenin. Nu is het zo dat New Orleans een dikke twee meter onder de zeespiegel ligt en de orkaan in eerste instantie quasi recht op de stad stormt. Verder piekten de olieprijzen boven de 70 dollar doordat productie is terug gevallen.

Doorgaans ben ik nogal lyrisch over RSS. Ik heb daar zelfs in het verleden reeds een en ander over geschreven. Tegenwoordig kom ik er zelfs niet toe om elke avond de massa blogs en de hoeveelheid informatie die dagelijks geproduceerd wordt, te doorploegen. Ik heb al geprobeerd om een strenge selectie door te voeren in een opdeling “wekelijks te lezen” en “dagelijks te lezen”. Maar zelfs dat bracht niet bepaald soelaas. Het werkt zelfs afschrikwekkend om elke avond weer mijn Thunderbird te openen. Het grote probleem is het onderscheid maken tussen wat interessant is en wat niet. Zelfs op de meest interessante blogs wordt er materiaal gepost dat lang niet zo interessant of relevant is. Ik zal dus op zoek moeten gaan naar een systeem van automatische filtering dat op basis van een aantal keywords mij dagelijks een digest levert van het meest interessante materiaal. Iemand suggesties? Laatmaarkomen!

Gisteren gezien en goedgekeurd: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Het verhaal gaat alsvolgt: Arthur Dent is een gewone man. Op een dag wordt de aarde vernietigd door een buitenaards ras. Hij is de enige die weet te ontsnappen. Op dat moment ontdekt hij dat het universum helemaal anders in elkaar zit dan algemeen aanvaard. Zo blijkt onder andere een handdoek een gevreesd wapen te zijn. Volledig geflipt verhaal, maar wel geniaal. Douglas Adams, de auteur van het oorspronkelijke boek waarop de film is gebaseerd, was dan ook voor geen kleintje vervaard. Wie deze film bekijkt onthoudt best het volgende: 42 en don’t panic.

Google does it again! Nu hebben ze een instant messaging service opgestart die MSN en Yahoo het vuur aan de schenen moet leggen. Als basis maken ze gebruik van het open en gestandaardiseerde (RFC 3920 en 3921) Jabber protocol. Dat betekent dat je niet noodzakelijk gebonden bent aan de Talk client van google, maar dat je ook andere clients zoals Gaim kan gebruiken. Of je kan zelf een client schrijven! (which reminds me: mijn zelfgeschreven java command line client zou hier dus mee moeten kunnen omgaan!) Daarnaast hebben ze deze nieuwe dienst gekoppeld aan hun e-maildienst Gmail. Daardoor kunnen houders van een gmailaccount gebruik maken van Talk. Google kan zich dus ook nog eens beroepen op een potentieel zeer brede gebruikersbasis! Eentje om toch in het oog te houden dus.

Edit: Ik merk net dat Talk default SSL afdwingt. SSL laat toe om je boodschappen te encrypteren vooraleer ze te versturen. Iets wat MSN niét doet. Daardoor is het heel makkelijk om bv. met Ethereal te gaan luistervinken naar MSN gesprekken in hetzelfde subnet zit. Op zich vind ik dat al een goede reden om MSN te laten vallen in het voordeel van Talk.

Edit 2: Volgens de about pagina wordt SSL enkel toegepast bij de authenticatie en niet bij het feitelijk versturen van messages. Bugger! Bij Google zijn ze daar wel hard bezig om werk van te maken. Verder lijkt het me ook best de moeite om eens de Privacy Policy te lezen. Niettegenstaande gesprekken niet gelogd worden, lezen we daar toch het volgende:

Wat mij betreft heeft Google toch niet echt uitstaans met hoeveel mensen ik praat en met wie ik praat. Wat ze onder “information displayed en clicked” verstaan, daar heb ik toch ook mijn vragen bij. Toch wel vrij vaag. Moest Microsoft zoiets proberen, dan zou er toch al snel een grote massa met fakkels en hooivorken richting Redmond trekken.

Gisteren mocht ik aanwezig zijn op het huwelijk van vriendin P. en vriend J. Zowat de Bonnie and Clyde onder de historici. De huwelijksmis was sehr schön en tijdens het feest achteraf gingen alle remmen los. Vooral de feestdis was op zijn minst indrukwekkend te noemen. Niet dat ik mij een indigestie heb gegeten hoor, maar vanochtend had ik bij het opstaan toch enkele momenten het milde gevoel van een betonmolen. Los daarvan was het na dik twee jaar keihard werken voor die twee een zéér geslaagde avond naar mijn mening. Kudos to them!
